Is there anything going on this week that doesn't involve getting in the car?
If you live in Herndon, the honest answer right now is yes, on three different nights, within about a five-minute walk of the same few blocks around Town Hall Square. Thursday mornings, Tuesday evenings, and Friday evenings each have their own free, town-run gathering going right now, and that overlap is not permanent. One leg of it wraps up on August 18. The other two keep going into the fall. Knowing which is which changes how you plan the rest of your August.
The Tuesday That's About to Disappear
Town Square Tuesdays has been the newer addition to Herndon's summer calendar, now in its second season at Town Hall Square. Live local music, lawn chairs, and lawn games run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. every Tuesday from June 16 through August 18, when this season closes out with a set from Crooked Sparrow. That's the only one of the three recurring gatherings with a hard end date already on the books. After August 18, Tuesday nights in Old Town go quiet until next summer.
That matters because it's easy to assume all of Herndon's outdoor programming runs on the same clock. It doesn't. Town Square Tuesdays is a two-month window. The other two run considerably longer.
Fridays Have More Runway, and a Name-Brand Lineup
Friday Night Live, at 777 Lynn Street, is the older and longer-running of Herndon's two concert series, and its August calendar is already locked in with acts named well in advance. August 7 brought The Reflex, an 80s tribute band. August 14, tonight, is Screaming Mönkeys, who've been playing the DC area for roughly a decade. August 21 brings JunkFood, a rock-pop-country act built around dancing rather than sitting still. Shows run 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., free, no ticket required.
Unlike Town Square Tuesdays, Friday Night Live isn't cutting off mid-August. If you only have room for one recurring free concert night in your week for the rest of the month, Friday is currently the safer bet, since it isn't the one with a published expiration date.
Thursday Morning Belongs to the Market, and It Runs the Longest of All
The Herndon Farmers Market, on the 700 block of Lynn Street by the Red Caboose, runs every Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to noon, and its season doesn't end until October 29. That's roughly two and a half months longer than Town Square Tuesdays and well past whatever Friday Night Live's final date turns out to be. Fairfax County Park Authority runs the market as one of ten producer-only markets countywide, meaning every vendor is selling what they grew or made themselves, not reselling.
Alongside the market, Farmers Market Fun Days brings kid-focused entertainers to Town Hall Square during the same Thursday morning window, timed to run right alongside the vendor stalls. If Tuesday nights are the first piece of Herndon's summer calendar to fold, Thursday mornings are the last.
What's New to Eat Before or After
The town's own list of recently opened businesses reads like a snapshot of a corridor filling in fast: Chicken Salad Chick at 494 Elden Street, Mexa Burritos & Bowls at 1042 Elden Street, and the Eat Street Indian food truck parked at 597 Elden Street on Fridays through Sundays. Add to that two bigger arrivals that took considerably longer to land than a fast-casual lease usually does.
Panda Express is now open at 598 Elden Street, a location that took nearly two years to move from a late-2024 announcement through construction to doors open, in a building that used to be a Burger King. It's one of only a handful along the Route 267 corridor between Leesburg and Tysons, filling a real gap rather than adding to a saturated one.
Beignets & Brew, the French pastry and coffee concept coming to Herndon Centre at 348 Elden Street, has had a rockier runway. An earlier announcement pointed to a June 20 opening. That date came and went. As of late July, the shop's build-out was essentially finished, with the team waiting on final permits and expecting to open sometime in August, which would make it the first Beignets & Brew location in Northern Virginia. Franchisee Travis Loan, who's developing the brand across the region, put it simply when the project was first announced:
"Herndon's always been a staple for Northern Virginia."
Whether that reads as confidence or just marketing depends on your patience for delayed openings. Either way, the slippage from June to August is worth knowing if you've been checking the storefront window expecting a ribbon cutting that hasn't happened yet.
If Herndon's chain openings run on a permitting clock measured in months and years, that's not new. Aslin Beer Company, now a fixture at 767 Elden Street near downtown, waited nearly four years for approvals before its taproom finally opened in December 2020. Measured against that, Panda Express's roughly two-year path and Beignets & Brew's two-month slip both look almost fast.
The Other Concert Series, Out at Frying Pan Farm Park
Not everything is happening downtown. Frying Pan Farm Park runs its own Thursday evening series, Hunter Mill Melodies, with a more acoustic, folk-leaning lineup than the electric bands at Friday Night Live. The Seldom Scene played July 23, Sharon Rae North played July 30, and an ensemble including Speidel, Goodrich, Goggin, and Lille played August 6. It's a different setting than Town Hall Square, quieter and more open, and worth the short drive if downtown's Friday crowd isn't your speed.
Frying Pan Farm Park also has the next big date on Herndon's outdoor calendar after the summer series wind down. Ramble 2026 runs Saturday, September 12, starting at 10:00 a.m., picking up some of the slack once Town Square Tuesdays has already ended and Friday Night Live's season is closer to its own finish.
What This Actually Means for Your Next Few Weeks
Herndon isn't short on things to do this month. It's short on time before one piece of the calendar closes. If Tuesday evenings at Town Hall Square are part of your routine, August 18 is the date to circle, since there's no confirmed return until next summer. Thursdays and Fridays have more room to breathe, with the market running into late October and Friday Night Live's next confirmed act already on the books for August 21. And if you've been driving past the Beignets & Brew storefront on Elden Street wondering why it's still not open, the answer is a missed June date and a permit process that's taken it into August instead.
None of this requires a car, a reservation, or much planning. It just requires knowing which nights are running out and which ones aren't.
