Four addresses in the 7200 block of Columbia Pike tell most of Annandale's October story. At 7219, a building covered in colorful murals is being renovated into a food hall that Annandale Today reported on Oct. 1 is "expected to open within the next few weeks." At 7200, the Eileen Garnett Civic Space hosts the Mason District Art Festival on Oct. 17. At 7254, Basil has closed for good, and a building permit has been filed for Mr. Pollo at the same address. One week after the festival, the Annandale Parade runs along Columbia Pike itself.
That cluster matters more this fall than it would in most years. Annandale's two other big shared spaces are both offline at the same time. The Block's food hall at Eastgate closed more than a year ago, and George Mason Regional Library closes on Oct. 23 for a renovation of about two years. Until those return, a short stretch of Columbia Pike carries much more of the neighborhood's everyday public life.
The gap The Block left at Eastgate
The Block operated at 4221 John Marr Drive in Eastgate. Its tenants were told to vacate by Aug. 31, 2025, because Eastgate was being redeveloped. The vendors went their separate ways after that. According to Annandale Today's August 2025 follow-up, SnoCream planned to move to Fair Lakes and Balô to Crystal City. Pokeworks and Bold Dumpling were not relocating.
Construction started on May 6, 2026, and part of Eastgate Shopping Center, including The Block's former space, has been demolished. The new six-story apartment building will have 11,200 square feet of ground-floor retail and is projected to finish in fall 2027. Annandale Today reported that none of the existing shopping center businesses was expected to return. When Fairfax County approved the project in 2023, it was planned as a 280-unit building replacing Eastgate's northern storefronts.
When the closure was first reported, FFXnow said the developer had talked with The Block about a possible "new concept" in the part of the shopping center that remains. Current reporting doesn't say whether that idea is still being discussed. So the honest timeline for Eastgate is a fall 2027 projection for a building whose retail tenants haven't been announced.
What is coming to 7219 Columbia Pike
The food hall at 7219 Columbia Pike is a separate project. None of the reporting connects it to The Block, and it hasn't announced a name or operator. Annandale Today has named three of the vendors so far:
- Seoul Kravings, which describes itself as "Korean street food, bold flavors, and Seoulful bites"
- Dough Market, with "Asian-inspired doughnuts, pastries, and coffee"
- Rice Culture, with "Filipino Japanese taiyaki and soft serve." Taiyaki is a crunchy fish-shaped cake with a creamy filling, and Rice Culture already has locations in Vienna and Chantilly.
A Vietnamese food counter and a full bar are also planned.
The building had a visible makeover long before the vendor list came out. In March, Annandale Today reported that county land records showed Annandale Social LLC renovating 7219 Columbia Pike for a restaurant and carryout, with an alcohol license pending. A few days later, the paper named Henley Bounkhong as the artist of the mural that was then taking shape on the building. The reporting doesn't say whether Annandale Social LLC is running the food hall.
As of the Oct. 1 report, the hall had not opened and no date had been set. "Within the next few weeks" could land it in the middle of October's busiest stretch, or after it.
The library closes the same month
George Mason Regional Library at 7001 Little River Turnpike is the other shared space going dark this fall. Fairfax County says the last day of service is Oct. 23, 2026, followed by "an approximately two-year renovation." An earlier report projected completion in 2028, but the county hasn't set a reopening date.
According to Annandale Today, the county says the building's systems are nearing the end of their life and the current layout doesn't meet present or future needs. The plans include a redesigned layout, a makerspace, quiet study rooms, small meeting rooms, a teen space, an upgraded children's area, flexible meeting space and rooftop solar. The county also told the paper it could not find a temporary library site nearby. George Mason staff will work at other branches during the renovation.
The county's deadlines are tight, and the first one is this week:
- Oct. 9: last day to place holds for pickup at George Mason
- Oct. 13: last day holds will be delivered to the branch
- Oct. 17: George Mason Library Celebration and Open House, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., per the county's schedule
- Oct. 23: last day of service and last day to pick up holds
Holds will be paused during the closure unless you switch them to another branch in your account. You'll keep your place in line. Materials can be returned to any Fairfax County Public Library branch. The county lists Kings Park, Richard Byrd and Thomas Jefferson as the closest alternatives. Thomas Jefferson will move to regional branch hours in early 2027. Culmore Library is closed for HVAC work and is expected to reopen in mid- to late February 2027.
So until February, the nearest smaller branch is closed too. That's another reason more of the neighborhood's activity will happen outdoors on Columbia Pike this month.

October on Columbia Pike, week by week
The calendar is busiest on the stretch that's gaining places, not the ones that are closing.
This week. Breeze Bakery at 4125 Hummer Road is closed Oct. 5 to 9 for renovations and reopens Oct. 10. On Oct. 8, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Mason Police District are holding a food drive for the ACCA food pantry at the Annandale Giant on Columbia Pike, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Oct. 10 to 17. Mason District Restaurant Week runs at participating businesses across the district, with an invitation from the Mason District Supervisor's Office. The two published listings disagree on the start date. An FCPS newsletter sent Oct. 2 says Sunday, Oct. 11 through Saturday, Oct. 17, and Annandale Today's calendar says Oct. 10 to 17. Neither has named participating restaurants yet. Mad Seafood at 7223 Poplar Street, near Annandale Road and Markham Street, is one of the newer places in the district and was already open when Annandale Today covered it in May.
Oct. 17. The Mason District Art Festival takes over Eileen Garnett Civic Space at 7200 Columbia Pike from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Mason District Arts Council is hosting. When registration opened in July, organizers said they had room for more artists and planned food and coffee options. The library's farewell open house is the same day, so you can go to both on one Saturday.
Oct. 23. George Mason Regional Library's last day.
Oct. 24. The Annandale Parade runs along Columbia Pike from 10 a.m. to noon.
The next two years
The Eastgate building is expected in fall 2027, and the library's last projection was 2028. Until then, the 7200 block of Columbia Pike is where most of the change in Annandale is happening. The civic space already hosts the art festival, the 7219 food hall is nearly finished, and a new restaurant is in permitting at 7254. If the food hall opens on the timeline Annandale Today reported, Annandale will have a food hall again a little over a year after The Block's last day.
If you're keeping an eye on the Eastgate building, the library timeline, or how these openings might affect your own corner of Annandale, our team follows these projects closely and is happy to share what we're seeing.
